FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF CHRIST 1/10/10
SUNDAY MASS –10:00AM & 7:00PM
Allen Chapel, Interfaith Center
We are ending the Flu precautions this Sunday –back to the usual holding hands during the Our Father, shaking hands, etc. at the Kiss of Peace, and sharing the communion cup. The only precaution will be that you self-monitor: that means -if you are sick with a communicable disease –stay home, if you are not feeling well avoid sharing in the ways indicated above.

SUBSCRIPTIONS
We now have subscriptions to America, U.S. Catholic, and One. They are found on the table in the center of the Religious Life office. Please do not remove them from the Center. The articles are readable and deal with current American Catholic issues. The purpose of the subscriptions is to help Newman students become aware of our continuing intellectual tradition.
What is the right thing to do? Would you steal a drug that your child needs to survive? Is it sometimes wrong to tell the truth? How much is one human life worth? What do you think and why? Take a front row seat at the first course Harvard has ever offered to everyone online.
If you’re interested in the philosophical side of social/political ethics you would find Michael’s Sandel’s internet class (justiceharvard.org) fascinating. Sandel is seen teaching his very popular class of over one thousand students –it is very engaging, exciting, and fascinating subjects are brought up. Covering major theories of justice Sandel favors Aristotle’s value-oriented social ethics –the base for the moral theology of St. Thomas Aquinas.

[FLU GUIDELINES FOR LITURGIES: OK, so we know it’s coming and the media has tried to scare us about the possibilities –they’re always good for the “bad news.” Several colleges that started sessions early have already reported flue quarantines on campus. Because we don’t know the actual seriousness of this thing, we will act responsibly with the hope of limiting the extent of its impact with a few precautionary measures.
As has always been the case if you (or the people you live with) are coughing, sneezing or otherwise ill, it‘s a good idea to stay home from Mass to recuperate so as not to infect others. Likewise, we will temporarily suspend offering the cup during Holy Communion, remembering that we always receive the whole Christ, "body, blood, soul and divinity" when we receive the Eucharist in either form. We’d ask that you’d receive the consecrated bread in your hands.
Our Deacon will not be on the altar once a month. If you are a Communion Minister distributing the consecrated bread on such an occasion, we’d ask you to use a wipe on your hands (located at the credence table before handling the bowls and breads. During the Sign of Peace, you can offer a smile, a little bow, the peace sign, or an “air hug” rather than a handshake or embrace. You can choose to refrain from holding hands during the Our Father for a similar reason.
We’ll stay in touch with the situation at RIT and we'll adjust our practices as a faith community when necessary. Please keep the health of us all in your prayers and actions as we enter the flu season.]
