Newman Catholic Community on the RIT Campus

Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Then

he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter” (Jn 2:7-8)

Donations for Relief Efforts in Haiti

Catholic Relief Services is coordinating efforts to send relief support to the people of Haiti, devastated by this week's massive earthquake. This Roman Catholic agency here in the United States has responded to many natural disasters in the past, including the collection and disbursement of millions of dollars in aid to those affected by the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 26, 2004. To make a donation, contact Catholic Relief Services on line at: www.crs.org or call 1-888-277-7575.

Donations may also be mailed to CRS at the following address: Catholic Relief Services, 228 W Lexington Street, Baltimore, MD 21201-3413.

ANNUAL RETREAT NEXT WEEKEND

ABBEY OF OUR LADY OF THE GENESEE

$20.00 Deposit due by Tuesday, January 19 –The Retreat is free (this includes room & board and supplies) due to the generosity of Newman Alumni. Your deposit will be returned -when and if you come. This assures us of your commitment to be there and helps us know how many retreatants we need to accommodate, and purchase food and supplies for.

We also need to know if you have a car and are driving, what time you intend to arrive on Friday evening, and provide you with directions. In good weather the Abbey is 45 minutes from the campus. Fr. Richard will coordinate this with retreatants by email. Be sure to let Fr. Richard know of any special needs you may have.

On Friday, January 22, supper will be available at Bethany House for those arriving by 5:00PM. The Divine Office of Compline will be in the Abbey Chapel at 6:40PM. The Retreat begins at 7:15PM, and everyone should be there at that time. You will receive a schedule for the Retreat at that time.

It would be disruptive to the other retreatants if you cannot be there for the whole time, because small sharing groups will be formed that it’s best not to break up them up with people coming and going.

On Sunday, January 24, we will return to campus after noon.

Let’s pray for the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and our openness to the presence of Christ in our midst!

Natural Family Planning

Anne Olek, a local Natural Family Planning educator, will be coming to RIT on Friday, January 15th at 6PM, to discuss Theology of the Body, the Church teaching about the sacred gift and purpose of human sexuality, and Natural Family Planning. We will meet in the SAU, room 1510, at 6PM, and cookies will be provided. Please email Sarah Bates at sjb6275@rit.edu if you are interested in attending.

SUBSCRIPTIONS

We now have subscriptions to America, U.S. Catholic, and One. They are found on the table in the center of the Religious Life office. Please do not remove them from the Center. The articles are readable and deal with current American Catholic issues. The purpose of the subscriptions is to help Newman students become aware of our continuing intellectual tradition.

What is the right thing to do? Would you steal a drug that your child needs to survive? Is it sometimes wrong to tell the truth? How much is one human life worth? What do you think and why? Take a front row seat at the first course Harvard has ever offered to everyone online.

If you’re interested in the philosophical side of social/political ethics you would find Michael’s Sandel’s internet class (justiceharvard.org) fascinating. Sandel is seen teaching his very popular class of over one thousand students –it is very engaging, exciting, and fascinating subjects are brought up. Covering major theories of justice Sandel favors Aristotle’s value-oriented social ethics –the base for the moral theology of St. Thomas Aquinas.
